Manuscript Review
After a brief discussion to uncover your publishing goals and objectives, our editor will read through your manuscript and provide a written report. This report will include such factors as: overall impressions, strengths and weaknesses, whether the current state of the manuscript meets your objectives, amount of work required and suggested next steps. The editor will support each finding with examples from the manuscript so that you will have a clear vision of where to go from this point.
Substantive or Developmental Edit
This edit focuses on the overall structure and content of the manuscript. Keeping your goals and audience in mind, the editor will ensure the content is clear and the structure communicates the core concepts to your readers. The editor may suggest changes, additions or deletions and may draft such proposals for your consideration. The manuscript will be returned to you for review and a lengthy discussion will follow. Not every manuscript will require this level of editing.
Stylistic Edit
At this stage, we will clarify language and tone to fit the audience, ensure the material moves along at an appropriate and consistent pace, eliminate jargon and smooth the language where required. This task is often referred to as a non-technical edit and again you will be asked to review and approve the adjustments.
Copy Edit
This is the technical edit of the manuscript and is often combined with the stylistic edit. At this stage the editor will perform a multitude of line-by-line editing tasks, including: editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mechanics; writing captions and/or credit lines; preparing the material for formatting by marking heading levels, noting placement of art or other design elements, writing running heads and documenting any unusual design issues for the formatter; ensuring consistency of footnoting and adjusting citation form; creating a list of materials requiring permission; and preparing front and back matter. This edit can be returned to the author for approval, but often queries are handled as the editing progresses.
Interior Design Consultation
We can create a design element list and work with the formatter to prepare an interior design sample. A good design will enhance the communication of your ideas. Once approved, the editor will apply these design specifications to the various elements of the manuscript. It is beneficial to prepare and approve the sample before the stylistic edit, but the application is combined with the copy edit stage. This step can be performed electronically or on paper.
Proofread
At this stage the formatter has produced a set of proofs electronic or paper. Usually the editor reviews the proofs simultaneously with you. In reviewing first proofs, the editor ensures nothing has been omitted, the interior design has been applied correctly and page breaks are appropriate. At this stage the editor will also insert page numbers into cross-references and complete the table of contents. You will be asked to review the material to ensure all the content is correct and up-to-date. The editor combines your changes with his or hers and returns the proofs for correction.
Depending on the amount of change made on first proofs, the formatter may produce a second set of proofs or correction pages only. We can continue to check the proofs until everything is accurate and ready for press.
Project Management
We can alleviate the burden of dealing with the various stages and multitude of details by managing your project for you. This does not mean you will have nothing to do; you will need to approve key decisions. However, we can contact multiple suppliers and present quotes from which you can choose; attend to market requirements, such as obtaining ISBN, CIP and Bar Codes, assist with pricing and assigning subject categories; provide design supervision and project co-ordination; liaise with all the parties and guarantee all details are handled; and ensure that your project flows problem-free through the assorted stages.
Writing
Throughout the process of promoting and selling your product, you will need to prepare copy for different audiences. Whether it is back cover copy to encourage a reader to make that book-buying decision, catalogue copy to intrigue the retail purchaser; or promotional copy to attract reviewers or distributors, we can help. We can address the needs of each audience and show them the benefits of selecting your product.
